Are you in risk for Cardiovascular Disease and love eating potatoes?

Join the Guelph Potato Study and contribute to scientific research! The University of Guelph is recruiting men and women (18-70) who are at risk for Cardiovascular Diseases. Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels that put you at risk for heart attack and stroke. CVD is characterized by a set of "intermediate" or metabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, and high blood sugar. Other risk factors include being overweight, having diabetes mellitus, and family history of early heart disease (including parental history of premature heart attack). This pilot study will investigate the effect and to what degree consuming purple potatoes, compared to consuming white potatoes, for 12 weeks has upon CVD risk. This project has been reviewed by the Research Ethics Board for compliance with federal guidelines for research involving human participants (REB# 16JN032). Participants will receive: - Free nutritional counseling - Free, fresh Ontario potatoes (purple or white) - $50 Zehrs gift card Paticipants will be required to: - Spend about 5 hours per week at home preparing and eating white or purple potatoes and recording their dietary intake - Attend 1 nutritional counseling session/week (approx 1 h) where blood pressure and weight will be taken at the Human Nutraceutical Research Unit (HNRU) on the University of Guelph campus - Give blood and urine samples and undergo bioelectrical impedence analysis to estimate body fat, at three of the HNRU study visits (approx. 1.5 h each, weeks 0, 6, 12) - Total time required including screening - 115 h Please contact us by email or phone: guelphpotatostudy@gmail.com 519-824-4120 ext.53728
